The fourth and last, but definitely not least of teamTBB's girls headed to Kona this weekend, is our back door qualifier, Chrissie Wellington, who it could be said is gatecrashing the 2007 Kona party, but could steal the show.
Chrissie has had the meteoric year in 2007, that again sounds very much like a Rebecca Preston Groundhog Day movie.
However Chrissie was not a triathlete at all, came to the sport late, and walked away with the world age group championship in Lausanne 2006.
Spurred on by her victory and as her history can attest, a bit of a wanderlust, Chrissie turned up at the teamTBB camp, asking if we could run the rule over her, and give her an opinion whether she could make it as a pro, if she gave her job away, and trained full time with total support of her hometown coach. She came, we saw, and said, What was that? Is she for real?
So, with a few provisos, the girl went home knowing teamTBB would offer her a trial if she took the big leap of faith to give it a go.
12 months later, she shocked the tri world by pulling off a victory in her first ever Ironman, again like Rebecca, I can say this freaky twosome, doesn't stop there, she has followed the similiar program to Rebecca and got similiar results, so off to Kona you go, girl.
Her early inkling she was good at sport?
"Well Coach, I had no idea at all, but when I was working on social projects in Nepal, I was riding a mountain bike to all the outlying villages, and my co-workers - not the girls 'cause I just thought, well they can't ride - but i had to keep stopping and waiting for the men, and it was very annoying as it gets cold at 5,000 m even in the middle of a sunshine day, and they kept saying, are you for real?"
"After the 3 months, I think they had seen I was for real, and I thought I might be alright at this bike riding caper, but one never really knows, in that environment, so when i went on holiday and completed the Across New Zealand Challenge at my first go without any real training. People told me this was a big famous race, and I had done some swimming as a kid, so I decided to give Triathlon a go."
"I can swim a bit, I ride ok and, well the run posed no problem for me in New Zealand, and that leads us to now."
So, yes, Chrissie Wellington is going to Hawaii and one is asked, why send her? And what is her biggest advantage? I can answer that with the same quote :
"Coach, since I entered Hawaii, for God's sake, please tell me who this Michellie Jones bird is? They talk of her and some Swiss girl named Badman as some super humans. I wouldn't know 'em if i fell over them. Are they that good, people talk as they were unbeatable."
"In their day, Chrissie, they were great champions, but theirĀ best days are long past, and only the myth and past heroic battles keeps the wolves at bay."
"Soon a new, strong woman, who is not hypnotised by Triathlon folklore is going to come through, and beat what they are now, two very good athletes past their best."
"Could that be me one day, Coach?"
"It well could be, time will tell."
"Well, I don't have a lot, so I am not going to waste it, I'm bloody 30 years old, Coach."
Ignorance is sometimes bliss, oh and a very powerful weapon in the right hands. Go get them, Chrissie, go get them kid!
