The Boss asked me to write a few words, hopefully to help educate some people!  (..from my mistakes).

You would think after 24 Ironman races I would know what I was doing!!!  But over the years I had told myself how I "needed" all this food during the Ironman race.

However, recently I was wandering
1.  Why I was not being able to finish the 2nd half of the Ironman run off strong like I should be able,
2.  Why I would need to go to the porta-loo 3 or 4 times during the 2nd half of the marathon,
3.  Why I would be in the medical tent for 4 hours after each Ironman race.

Well, thanks to the Boss, prior to IM South Africa he went throo what I was eating during the races.  He found all sorts of food stuffs which were basically killing my race.
For example, I was taking pretzels during the bike as I felt I needed salt, but all this was doing was sucking all the water inside me up AND leaving all that pretzel gunk inside me for so at about 13 miles on the run I would need to go to get rid of it in the porta loo.
I was also taking musily bars, which again, would suck alot of water out of me and leave alot of hard to digest stuff in my body, which I would have to get rid off at the toilet too.
I was then needing to drink alot of water because I was thirsty, so then it was all sloshing about inside me.  And with all the water I was drinking I would need to pee alot which meant I am loosing minerals.  Basically I was I BIG MESS!
Trying to run a 3 hour marathon when you are a BIG MESS does not work.  You need your stomach and body to be ready for action NOT full with food that will slow you down and make you ill.

By taking out the shit stuff and keeping it real simple, I was able to race Ironman South Africa strong.  Not need to go to the toilet, AND finish the race off with an all out 200m sprint to the finish line to beat Edith Niedenfriniger.
All by adjusting what I was eating.

ThankYou Boss for showing me what I was doing wrong.  I hope that from now on, I can continue to race strong till the finish line and fewer visits to the medical tent where Stephen has had to watch me on deaths door for hours on end!!
Maybe it will make you think what you are doing too!

Bella, if you don't mind me asking, what do you actually eat now during the races?  I know it's all very individual, and what works for someone, might not work for the other.  And sometimes, keeping it simple ain't the 'easiest' thing, especially with all the marketing out there.
From my personal experience, I've had my best ironman, and best run (not once did I feel 'dead') for my first ironman in 2005.  Doc gave me a very simple formula to follow, and I followed it to the 't'.  However, my race performance and how I felt during the race, might of also have something to do with the fact that I was pretty fit  Wink.  Anyway, Doc's simple formula for me that day was eat something very small every 15 mins on the bike.  This could include:  some energy gel, 1/3 banana, 1/5 powerbar, mini mars bar/milky way (not snickers!!! because of peanuts), some gatorade/powerade/whatever's on course....  So that's what I did every 15 mins on the bike.  For the run, I just went with the flow, couple of gels, energy drink, coke ( Grin) at half way.
But as you said, everyone is different, I was just interested in what you have now, by cutting all the 'shit stuff' out?

Well, I think what the Doc told you to do in 2005, is what you should be doing now too!
What you were told to do, is what I do now.

Edith!  Hi!!
What a surprise to hear from you!  ThankYou for your post.
And thankyou for our "Marathon War".  It was good training for our next races!

Hi Sugar!
Actually, I dont use gels, they make me feel sick.  But most people seem to find them good.

i asked her too , because of one reason .
people are always looking to improve things , and like shoe companies they develop the perfect one , and they change it cause more models need to be sold
so if the correct shoe for many was developped in 1984 , then what about next years model
so with food .
let this be clear
this is the most individual , thing in triathlon , and the  one plan fits all , is why 1/2 the iron people are
there shitting and throwing up along the way .
they are getting their grams in or the calories
oh here is a couple of salt tablets , wheees the caffiene ? what about this magic stuff , give this a whirl .
keep it simple
thats the key
keep it to the stuff you practice on .
dont stress about it
get a routine and stick to it .
you dont like gels fine , doesnt mean your race is over ,
just find a replace ment ,
it could be melted chocolate bars for the run .
taste better have huge callorie  and fat .
but watch people howl me down .
STORY TIME
let me tell you , i had a little experience in  1980 something
i had a swimmer , called evan barry , and the boy by swim standards was slow
so that would have made him a triathlon swim guru
but he trained very hard , and was a nice , kid
so we said , evan , your not going to the olympics , i can tell you that , he said thanks doc for your honesty , what can we do to get my name remembered some where and then i will give it away
and go to uni and give that 100%
swimmers tend to be much more realists than wanna be triathletes , but i digress
so , i thought for a week
and some stupid thing come up
about the guiness book world record for 24 hrs swim
was 90 km
i thouhgt for another week worked out the splits .
talked to my mate , who now coacheS mr hacket , so he know s his stuff.
and we thought a supa fit guy could nail it .
so , we had a meeting ,and as evan was already very fit , we said at the queensland swimmothon
we would train for 10 weeks and give it a crack .
so during that time even coverd some times 20km a day at least 3 times a week .
we got in touch with all the gurus at the uni of brisbane about what to eat and drink .
now evan was a man after my own heart and had a very particular stomach ,
so all we tried , didnt work, he got cramps , he  had to toilet .
but reelly  he just hates  the taste of every thing
our resident sports guru and nutritionalist , said forget it
the kid is kidding ,no discipline .
well i watch him swim 100x 100 3 times a week and once with a band ,  the doc back in them days makes the tri version look like a pussy cat .
but i knew a kid that did that , didnt lack discipline , and he didnt lack brains either .
so 1 week left , i sat down with even and said every swim set i see you with a can a coke and a mars bar
before each session and after each .
i saaid even , dont that make you sick ?
he said doc , i live on this , i drink 10 canS a day and eat may be 8 mars bars , 4 before and after training
3 at school and one at night .
but , i am worried coach how i am going to get thru , with out stopping for , food
as 90 km is about 1min 30 or faster   per long course 100
i said son , that is not a worry now .
so when even donned his trunks in lane 1 of the valley pool in brisbane , at midday .
coach had lined up the mars distributor , and the coke bottler
and even was going to be rocket fueled by them exclusively
the gun went and so did even , hammering 1m20 100s , like a swiss watch  chimes
and in one 100 at 30 min he back stoked and ate 1/2 a mars bar , then swigged coke off the block on ever 8th 100 ,
well he powered thru the night , on his rocket fuel  and into the morning he was still ripping along
i was absolutely amazed ,i knew the boy was a natural stayer but this was redicoulous ,
9 am he started to falter , the sun burn was killing him , we pulle him out , swathed hin in 50 plus sun bloc  and off he went again
oh the food , well we stuck to the same , and it still sticks in my head today , as the last 30 min he being a proud man , said coach lets let the brake off ,and mr barry swam  the last  set of 100 on on 1h\m15
banging the wall , tally ing up  his laps the guinees book  rep
said 96 km  and even barry had his , piece of time in the sun ,
and i was so proud , cause this kid , was a worker , with a limited talent , one that wasnt limited ,was self
hammering .
there wasnt a set, he wouldnt try , his fav  3x 5000m on 1hr interval yes tri guys  you read right !
the record stood for a long long time ,
but what sticks in my mind even today , they took him to hospital , 3rd degree burns
queensland sun does it to yer ,
and all else he was fine , but i went in to visit him , and there he was sitting up
sipping a coke , and eating a mars bar , saying coach , the hour 6 to 12 , then 18 to 20
were the tuffest , but if we dont count them , it was sweet .
yep i think that was an understatement ,
i kid you not .
evan barry taught me more , than most , i have had to pay to listen to , on the subject !

Great story Doc!

I like twix bars, on occasions. PNF used candy bars as well.

funny you mention that 3 x 5000 set, doc

i had a kid when i coached swimming who was an amazing worker like this kid.  in high school he eventually went 4'00 400m and about 15'50 1500m but he went to college, never trained right, and never got any faster.

anyway, when he was about 16, i asked him to come up with a challenge set for the holiday season.  we ended up with 4 x 5000 on the hour.  knowing the kid, i thought nutrition might be an issue so i brought him some stuff.  good thing, because he showed up with a big jug of water and some orange slices.

I've seen a guy do 100 x 100 with a loaf of sliced white bread at the end of the pool  Grin

Every time he felt like he needed something he'd have another couple of slices  Grin

We're all different  Huh

haha
muffin man ,
now we got some real  talk , on a triathlon web site ,
4x 5000 , what a beauty , and on water and oranges , ignorance is bliss , in a lot of cases ,
and i bet he just smiled before he got in and smiled like a split water melon
when he jumped out , and said
nailed that one coach
another one ,
a littel  girl i had ,
coach , i am never going to be fast enuff , to swim for australia , i am ttoo  small , and i just start when the race is over , butterfly is for the bigger stronger girls  coach , what do you think ?
kid your got a heart the size of your body , we can use that to catch em .
i ll do antything  coach any thing .
well how about 32 x 200 fly  evry tues pm
and sat morning or friday nite , i forget now , we do 10 x 400 fly or it could have been 12 or possible 15 ,
but i say 10 so tri people dont faint , reading this .
but i bet kid none of them other girls tuff enuff to do that , those fast cry babies , wont cope with your finnish
she did it every week for 3 yrs , and at the end
she indeed pulled on the aussie track suit at international meets, many times  , and when asked , why your so talented , as scribes do after the fact or not knowing the facts
she would say ,
tues days and thursdays ,coach let me off the team practice , and let me do my own thing .
it was just what i needed  Roll Eyes Wink

the buscuit in the twix ,
is not ideal , it will take water to digest in your gut .
sort of like the pretzel  thing with bella
dried fruit , back inthe day , was big
but it sucks so much water out of your system as you digest ,
or that is my story and i am sticking to it

Oh, I fainted from the swim numbers  Sad
However here at home I swim in 50 meters beautiful pool in holyday conditions...

Ok, the topic is long distance nutrition....
I also have some little ideas.
Not about what to eat, but how?!

-try to keep your tummy dry and warm during racing- cold, wet outfit sticking to it can cause stomach cramps, at least for me...
-when your stomach is already too upset to take anything more, try to keep some sugary food (like banana) in your mouth for a while without swallowing it, something-true not too much, can absorb even from your mouth. Ok, you will look like a hamster, but who mind?!
-I am washing down everything with a little water-that makes it sure not being too concentated what you took, and also wash away that awful sweet taste what can make me sick after a while.
-Before race morning breakfeast leave more time for your stomach to wake up and being able to digest. It is an unusal early time for your poor stomach.
