General Category / General Discussion / Doc's Walk this Way Looking for Clues

Living in Boulder isn't all bad, I have learned one or two things over the years (and seen alot of what not to do too). The Japanese marathoners that migrate to town every year for example heed Doc's advice to the letter. When injured, you can see them in the mountains walking all day long. If they can't run, then they walk all day long. While this is extreme and triathletes can swim/bike so we probably don't need to walk 8 hours a day. In addition, even when not injured, these runners as well as many of the African runners don't have any ego and are willing to take their easy runs ridiculously easy but when they run fast you better watch out. It is interesting to see world class runners from around the world following Doc's clues.

I haven't tried them, but I have heard only good things. And Xena and Carrie have been running very fast in the cloud racers which means it must be good. Hopefully they can chime in and give you some feedback.

Great article Scotty! And Doc definitely hits the nail on the head with some of the issues. The US has fallen into some of the pitfalls he mentions. I wonder if the UK's rise in all sports across the board is also a bit of the pre-Olympics push. It seems like across the board the UK has been improving dramatically in all Olympic sports.

General Category / General Discussion / Swimmers are tough

Doc was talking the other day about hard swimmers training through injuries. I had a few memories of my own from college with the constant ice flowing and taped to shoulders so everyone left practice looking like a football player post-swim. Then, on cue as I was watching the Aussie swim trials, Eamon Sullivan proved Doc's theory that swimmers are tough nuts. The broadcasters were showing all his injuries over the last 3 years in a diagram. As always, Doc seems to have his hand on the pulse.

I agree with all the recommendations. But two things I noticed this year. First, I need to have my drinks less concentrated in hot races more water and less calories than in cool races. Second, don't go overboard in the week leading up add a bit of extra salt and fluids but don't get crazy. I did and was sick before the race even started. Good Luck!!

I think 2 beat swimming is great and suits some people very well. I am a 2beat kickers as a short swimmer who can't kick for sh*t. (Really, I drown trying to kick freestyle.) It is the best style for me. Once you get the timing right you will fly then focus on your arm cadence. The timing reminds me of running where arms/legs balance each other out - so opposite leg goes down as hand enters- so as Stephen said right hand enters/left leg kicks and vice versa. Then to work on my arm cadence, I have been doing 25s. And another great tool is the band, swimming band only forces you to have a quick catch if you start gliding too long you'll sink.

US team will come down to the WCS race in San Diego. I think first american with a top 8 finish will get a spot and maybe two finishers in top 8 would get each get one of the two mens slots for the US. However if no one is in the top 8, I think it will be discretionary based loosely on world ranking and wcs results. The last womens' slot should be exciting as Laura Bennett and Sarah Haskins will have to battle it out for the last spot.

Everyone talks about Chrissy & Tom, Rinny & TO, but I think the new power couple could be our Xena and DD! Way to go Dave so happy you got a big win at home. I hope you both have rip roaring races next weekend!

Lots of amazing racing out there. Xena was impressive as always. I am proud to call her a teammate. You should have seen her in the medical tent after the race; she gave it everything and left nothing out on the course.

Not sure if I will be setting any trends. But it was hot and I was trying to get in as many fluids as possible. It is hard to get much out of those little cups. I find having a full water bottle in T1 and at special needs at least helps keep me hydrated. I don't really like having a waist belt jiggling to this method seems to work a bit better for me even if it looks silly
