'The secret is that you think there's a secret' - Brother Colm O'Connell, the man behind many of Kenya's greatest runners.
"They don't like jam," says Brother O'Connell, reaching for another sandwich and then leaning back against the peeling wall, his feet up on the bench. "So these are just for the coaches."

Hey Pantani I have had the chance to meet brother Colm on several occasions!
He did not know much about running when he came to Kenya. But what he had, was the will to NURTURE and the ability to READ his athletes very well. As he lived and still lives with the athletes in pretty decrepit conditions. That would be normal for a Kenyan, but not for a westerner!
He would have had more champions. If managers wouldn't "poached" many of his runners for bits of money NOW . Versus staying with Colm, and having a longer, consistent and more rewarding career...
I guess when you grow up that poor. And youre offered a free ticket to Europe/America with free accom. Where the "deal" is to give a huge chunk of your winnings to the "manager". Only to realize your sharing a small flat with a dozen others and racing EVERY weekend...

Hey Sam nice quote and welcome to TeamTBB! Im not sure if you remember me? But back in 2004 I took part in the pre-olympic camp in Penticton. And I remember running with you some kilometer reps along side the channel between the lakes

You were just a kid then!
Course I remember - wasn't Sean, Paul, and Terenzo there too? And one other - can't remember..blond hair?
Anyway, thanks for the welcome and looking forward to meeting everybody in due course. I'm stopping with MB next week in Mooloolaba and training with the group for a while - really excited about it all.

Marathon training for milers: "Stamina is the key to the whole thing, because you can take speed for granted. No? Look here. Everybody thinks a four-minute mile is terrific, but it is only four one-minute quarter miles. Practically any athlete can run one one-minute quarter; but few have the stamina to run four of them in a row. How do you give them the necessary stamina? By making them run and run and run some more, until they don’t even think in terms of miles. There is no psychological magic and no pain barrier involved. It is merely a process of gradual conditioning." -Arthur Lydiard

"To be a cyclist is to be a student of pain....at cycling's core lies pain, hard and bitter as the pit inside a juicy peach. It doesn't matter if you're sprinting for an Olympic medal, a town sign, a trailhead, or the rest stop with the homemade brownies. If you never confront pain, you're missing the essence of the sport. Without pain, there's no adversity. Without adversity, no challenge. Without challenge, no improvement. No improvement, no sense of accomplishment and no deep-down joy. Might as well be playing Tiddly-Winks."
