I'm not sure how true it is, but it was a quote attributed to him in Triathlete Magazine just after he went sub-8. I'll see if I can find the article and scan it in. But like Doc says, he was a very much unheralded athlete, probably because he came around in a time of other German greats, and preferred to keep to himself. But there is no doubt that he will remain one of the greatest triathletes of all time, over all distances.

A friend of mine reminded me of this classic quote the other day. I was going to adapt it as if I were a coach but there may be one or two on this forum better qualified to do it justice. I have already adapted it for use in many business situations...
