looking thru the blogs , i come across rebekahs next effort  in trying to tone down  her last post .
it  made me think , of how so many athletes cant be honest with the outside world .
obviously , bek is feeling very pleased with her decision , her new training , and the way she has ripped off the weight and looks like a real lean mean racing machine .
it has her thinking exactly the thoughts she has said out allowed .
every athlete  just secretly says it to them selves , only a few make it public .
some view it as arrogance , others view it as over confidence , some view it as disrespectful, and others view it as just plain rude .

When the facts are , it is none of the above .

Its just an honest appraisal , of what the individual is making their goal .
miss coco , is a very quiet , one could say  shy Wink girl , but i think for any one that can read , when it comes to her goals and combat , she has no problem hiding what she is after .

bella too , basically only gives an opinion on anything when she is asked .
however , when some ask, they are taken a back by getting a very truthful and strait answer .
what she is thinking in her head ,is vividly explained in all its splender by her tongue .

reinaldo , is a very quiet unassuming humble guy ,but if you dont want to hear the truth ,with no barriers ,one should not ask him any questions relating to what he is trying to do with his performance .

All of these people , have one very big thing in common, that should be taken into consideration ,when evaluating their prose ,  they all walk the walk, after the talk .

I,like many i would think were brought up on , the saying , 'sometimes the truth hurts'
and how people  react to such honesty from no bullshit people ,when they are confronted with an answer that they would not give ,
to me is a reflection of themselves .

i would strait away question ,if their belief  in them selves is as strong as these people ,
or more to the point ,
should these sages , be switching a light on  for them .
Are they delivering , a coaching improvement message to those that feel uncomfortable ,stating to them
what they feel is the obvious ?.

A good parable , from inside our squad , was when chrissie wellington  dropped her bags in her first camp ,
some will remember this with a cringe , she had not been allotted a room yet , and the first words that came out of her mouth to an astonished  set of squad memebers , was ,' WHEN DO WE START ,I AM GOING TO THE OLYMPICS'
yes that was her opening shot infront of pros that had been doing it for years ,but it was no shot , it was just her expressing  what she thought she would do , now it made  her very unpopular .
I had to have words with some squadies , as they thought , that i should have had words to her then and there . She was given a room in the boys house.

i was taken to task because i didnt , i couldnt , because it was music to my ears , it told me so much
about the chrissinator , her strengths , her weaknesses , but most of all , what she believed chrissy wellington  was capable of .

People were horrified and thought i was very 'unprofessional '  for saying in a public forum , i get up every day with the one thought  to 'knock all the other coaches on their arse '

That was most likely the most professional thing i said .

If i was in our squad , i would have thought ,yeah my main man is out there trying to be the best coach in the world ,and i got him in my corner.  Go get em coach.

Self belief , or should i say lack of it ,brings down more athletes ,than any technical problem ,or dare i say it 'any bike position'.

When we have people in the squad showing it , we do not  cringe at it
we embrace it , if we feel uncomfortable with it , we should take it as a lesson of where we have to get to in this department .
i will leave you
with an answer that i was asked  to give in another post , of which i didnt .

"how do you pick your athletes ?'
well one of the points  and there are many that need to be ticked , is in this very old and wise arabic saying .
There are  some players who  play weakly , but dont know they play weakly.
                      These are the ignorant.
                        SHUN THEM .
There are players who play weakly and know they do.
These are the clear sighted .
                        HELP THEM
There are players who play strongly and do not know they play strongly.
                        These are the modest .
                         HONOUR    THEM
There are players that play strongly  and know they play strongly .
                        These are the sages.
                         FOLLOW THEM .

You play strong  and you know you play strong , it doesnt get castigated here .
rather we will follow  and learn !

One of your best yet Doc. All the greatest champions have one thing in common, they believe 100% in them selves. Some say it out loud ie Ali, Armstrong, Doc? and some keep it inside ie Borg, Federer. Yes there are those athletes that make some people cringe but back that up by "walking the walk". I remember how people got really pissed at Macca when he finished second at Hawail, he went around and told everyone that he was the Best Triathlete in the world....he believed that much in his ability. He got inside peoples heads and then came back and proved it! At the moment CW is the best in the world, why because all her main rivals say she is the Best! She can't remain undefeated forever and one day some one is going to beat her......who will that be?

Great post Doc! I always hid from my goals, was too weak to admit them and had no confidence in myself to reveal them. A change in attitude after completing my 1st triathlon, an IM last year has opened my eyes to the possibilities of what anyone can do if you work hard enough.
Therefore I made it my goal to train, improve my crap swim (still a WIP) and return to IMM 09 with the goal to qualify in my AG for Kona. I have not hidden from this goal I have laid it out there for all. Like you say some people think this arrogant but most see it as a driving force that has also had a positive effect on my training buddies. The race is looming near, and I know I can’t control anything other than myself on race day so that slot would be a cherry on the cake and if not this time around I will give it another go on another day.
As Alex has said to me many times, “keep living your dream.” Coupled with trying to work and training almost full time – I can definitely say I feel I am living my dream. Of course it’s not easy, dreams never are, but I have learnt the hardest thing is making that first step to admit what it is you want.
I don’t post much on the forum, but I read a lot, and as always very inspiring, entertaining reads.
Thanks guys, hope to see some of you in Langkawi (from behind of course)  Grin.
