i've been experimenting with a two beat kick. my thinking was that since the wetsuit seems to somehow cut down on the amount of kicking i do that focusing on a powerful 2 beat kick might be a good option. wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this.
also, i've just been doing it based on what feels right...if i pull with my left arm when my hand gets close to my left leg i then kick with that (left) leg. is that the proper technique??
thanks, lisa

Yes what you are feeling is normal. The wetsuit gives you alot more bouyancy in the legs. Alot of the kicking you do in the pool is just keeping your legs up. Kicking the left leg as the right hand goes in is perfect, helps the rotation. Nice big kick at that point is great You need to have a nice fast arm turnover and you will have a lovely stroke

Lisa I think it a smart girl .. Bretthas forced me to change to two beat after years of trying to swim fast! Finally I am making times I never thought I could with a lower heart rate higher turn over more pull! It's really good for us being ok g distance swimmers ! Look at the greats like tracey wickham all two beat kickers I love it n so does doc!!

thanks everyone. glad to hear i might be heading in the right direction.
i've always been thinking of linking the kick to the arm that's just finished pulling, but i like the idea of thinking of it in terms of the arm that's about to pull. sounds like it would really help with getting a good rotation and having a stronger pull.
i'm determined to get under 60 minutes...still have 4:03 minutes to go...

I have been experimenting with 2 beat kick as I aint much of a kicker. trying to use it to create elevation of the legs.
I thought that when you pull with the right hand you kick with the right leg.....have I got this wrong ? Or do I need to adjust the timing a bit?

Your legs should work in opposition to your arms, to act as a counter-balance. Same as running, left leg and right arm move together, and vice versa.

I think you have it right. As the right hand pulls past your hip your right leg is is on the downstroke. But it is a timing and rhythm thing. Remember, The kick is what gives you lift and balance. It does little to propel you through the water. It's why most with 2 beat or not kick at all when the wetty goes on. Its why we pull with paddles a fair but. The press and push are what really move you. But this vid shows the 2 beat well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xWFRT67X7Q&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Hey cambo.robertson! A good tip is to thrust your hips to get it all started! I have seen some very good 2 beaters do heaps of band-only-swimming. Where they do somewhat of a fly-kick-with-freestyle-arms! And doing that, you will figure out pretty quick the timming in your 2 beat kick. As its sink or swim

I think 2 beat swimming is great and suits some people very well. I am a 2beat kickers as a short swimmer who can't kick for sh*t. (Really, I drown trying to kick freestyle.) It is the best style for me. Once you get the timing right you will fly then focus on your arm cadence. The timing reminds me of running where arms/legs balance each other out - so opposite leg goes down as hand enters- so as Stephen said right hand enters/left leg kicks and vice versa. Then to work on my arm cadence, I have been doing 25s. And another great tool is the band, swimming band only forces you to have a quick catch if you start gliding too long you'll sink.

Hi Guys, Thanks for all the responses. Seems like I was kicking at the right time, however I wasn't focussing on the right things. I have been back to the pool and instead of focussing on right hand pull, right leg kick, I am now focussing on left hand enters water right leg kicks. Just that little shift in focus seems to help create better body rotation and balance....more importantly more speed! Cheers Cam

Hi all My leg kick was very bad. But then I read this post and in my last 2 swim trainings I tried to do the 2 beat kick. It's awesome! I swim as fast as before or even a bit faster and the heart rate is lower. Thank you very much for this post! Cheers
