the clues -
summer olympics
links to Japan - Tokyo 64??
use the setting in training - the track and athletics??

You're a kiwi so I'm going to say it was about Peter Snell? but havent any idea who said it.

Unless it's about Joe Frazier - but I'm not sure that you use the ring as a setting in training unless Doc has some new ideas!

Yip, Huggy Bear is nearly there, it was Peter Snell taking out the 800 and 1500m double on the athletics track.
All we need now is the coach who said it?

With this tip it should be pretty easy, the coach has had some influence over Doc

Percy Cerutty?

Yes, we have the correct answer, congrats mcunnama!

One famous Aussie coach

Peter Snell wrote a book on his career called "No bugles, no drums" which I have just finished reading, time for a blog on how he got the title, funny story

Grin It was actually Errol who got it right (James' dad), not me. He just isn't registered on the forum so I get the honours  Wink
And James will tell you that he has a head full of (useless?) trivia so it's no surprise that he knew the answer (and he didn't even have to Google it!!)

And as a prize, James gets...?  Grin

I was going to go with PC too, but I dismissed him as the language was a little too "clean"!  Wink

ok here is one ,
a champion athlete when asked , how did you keep your motivation when you were tired from all that training .

well that is easy , i just remember some days when muma was so sad that she didnt have enuff vegetables
for  us ,and my daddy would sneak out and get some grass  bring it in and boilit and tell muma to tell uis is collared greens  like some of the other kids were being fed .
i tell ya for get the training ,the thought of my daddy getting the grass to feed us helped me
when things got real tuff , i just look into my opponents eyes and see some one trying to take away all i had ,
nobody was going to make me go back  to eatin  "the greens" thats all the motivation i ever needed
