The biggest lesson I have learnt from this site (and I have learnt lots) is that the brain is the biggest obstacle to overcome in pursuit of exellence.

What I'm about to say isn't supposed to be arrogant, it's to illustrate the point.

When I started on the road to Ironman I knew I would do it but I had no idea how.  So I bought some books, I talked to people and I got a coach.  Those things got me over the finish line of my first Ironman.  But then I started to think about what I needed to do to be my best.  There was nothing left to buy and finally attention turned to.....me.

The books, my friends or coach hadn't got me over that line.  I did.  When I realised what I had accomplished and this was only three years ago, it materially changed me as a man.  I became an overall better person, had a much higher self esteem, confidence and an inante refusal to accept something was out of my reach.  Long term goals career wise (ten years) have been achieved in 3 and I spend more time with my family than I ever have.

Once you refuse to be limited by the barriers your mind has put in your way you become so much free-er (?) as a person and life just becomes a better place to be.

I'm still nowhere near where I want to be - I still have deep, ingrained, life time embedded barriers that will take time to come down - but now I know they will.

Everytime I hear people say; "I would do Ironman but I don't have the time" or "I could work harder for promotions but I value time with my family more" or "I wish I could spend time with my family but I'm so busy at work" it kills me.  All these barriers can be dismantled if only you refuse to accept the limitations you have placed on yourself.  Positive, open thinking brings massive returns.

With some very dear friends and family I've tried to 'preach' the theory to them and it's working - and that is what I'm most proud of.

Coaching, books, other people experiences are all valuable tools.  But these things are nothing if you don't open your mind or allow yourself to be inhibited by non-existent shackles.

Sorry, got a bit carried away!

Matty, that's a good one!

He can even sign his name and type on the computer!! Just goes to show that anything is possible. "I can't" is not a phrase that he will ever mutter. I bet he doesn't even know what it means.

Pretty cool...thanks for sharing!

DanL - I enjoyed reading that. You are right, when you hear the word 'BUT' used by people, it wipes out everything that they have said before the they said, 'but'.

You could become great... or you could be making excuses.

Well I heard a very sad news about Jure Robic getting killed in a traffic accident.
That news led me to the article that has relevance to this thread. It talks about his mental strength. It's long but it's worth the time, you can read it here:
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/05/sports/playmagazine/05robicpm.html?_r=2&pagewanted=print

In case you don't know who he was:
"In addition to his 5 RAAM victories, Robic also set the 24-hour road world record, won Le Tour Direct two consecutive times and won the DOS, the race across Slovenia, three consecutive times. Robic achieved over 100 victories and 150 podium appearances throughout his cycling career."
