As Doc started telling me last year, the adage of ice as a cure-all is overdone. 
Not that we needed any more confirmation then Doc's word.  But here is more proof from the new york times....

I guess the moral is don't eat up all the current fades in training and recovery.  Doc knows best.

Hey MBE thanx for sharing!

Icing definitively has its use for TRAUMATIC injuries.
As an organic/cheap/available anti-inflammatory.

I have noticed that the regular use of heat, injured or not.
Actually has a very positive impact on older athletes or the "mature" general population.
As it helps to lubricate joins and loosen worn tendons.
Same reason why many western retires with arthritis migrate to hot/humid locations!
And vow that their bodies feel much better!

Heating tightness related aches and pains BEFORE a workout will definitively help to resolve them.
As it loosens and gets the blood flowing before getting into motion.
Instead of repeatedly doing damage control with ice AFTER the session...

the facts are
that most of my physio advicehas come from watching different things used on animals .
they cant talk ,so you get a much clearer picture of what woprks and what doesnt .
a grey hound doesnt listen to bullshit  , either does a horse ,
so use a certain new fangled method on them ,and they will tell you what they think ,some times in the most painful way .
ice slows recovery and can lead to other injueries post recovery
fact
as matt says it has its place and i agree
im just liking it more in my drink  than on an athlete or in a bath tub
you been hearing here for some 35 yrs now
ice is not the magic bullet ,
its sole purpose is to reduce swelling , that it does , but then one must ask , why does the body swell strait away if that is bad for it  Undecided
nature again  not knowing whats best
in my opinion
