OK, I have been thinking after reading the post by muffinman on Hillary's thread, that Aussie slang is probably a bit difficult to understand. So thought we could all post some typical Aussie slang words and their proper English meaning, mainly for muffinman who wants a bit of Aussie action at IMWA. So first one I can think of is: THONG: Known in Australia as a rubber style sandal you wear on your feet. AKA pluggers, surfboards (the really BIG flat style ones), Havianas (brand name) Not to be confused with the 'American Thong' (see next point). This is a staple item in nearly all Australian households. G-STRING: A piece of underwear garment, worn mainly by women (but not exclusively), that results in a permanent wedgie!! AKA G-Wizzer, G-Banger. In America it is known as a thong. WANKER: A derogotive (sp?) name directed towards males, used mainly by females. Can be subsistuted with dickhead, arsehole etc. Please feel free to add

OK, these have already been mentioned in the other thread. But for those that didn't read that thread, I'll repeat them:
RECKON: A substitute word for 'think'; eg. "I reckon it's gunna rain"; often I use it at the end of sentences- "do ya reckon?"
SHEILAS and BLOKES: ladies and men
will add more later....

Heres a little Aussie sayin that may be useful when talkin about the competition (or yourself for that matter):
"I was (or he/she was) goin off like a bucket of prawns in the midday sun." Loosely translates as man u were flyin or rockin the course (notice how I am even typin in Aussie for u?)

how about while someone is explaining something you just keep saying yeh, yeh, yeh... kind of longish with a touch of enthousiasm and monotone at the same time.. hard to explain but once you hear it you never forget..

Yeh, yeh know what u mean drags Another one, if someone says they are 'spewin', this means they are 'pissed off' (again I think an Aussie phase where Americans just use pissed) about something. eg: Mate, I was spewin when that prick (is that another Aussie slander word? Not sure) drafted off me.

jo brought up a word that begs more discussion...that is "piss"...it seems to me that a command of this word is essential if one wants to talk like a true aussie. like many words prevalent in australian vernacular, "piss" is not a word that should be used in polite company in the states. nonetheless, it does have its uses here. there are two in particular that i can think of: "i am pissed off"--as in "angry," and "i have to take a piss"--which is almost always a statement made by a male, usually in the outdoor context...as in, (on the bike) "in a few miles i need to pull over and take a piss."
i've been trying to think of the many ways the aussies use this word so that we could make a list here. i know i'm going to miss some, so can the real aussies please chime in? and please correct me if ihave misinterpreted...
"pissing down" = raining hard..."it's been pissing down in bor saen this past week." (get) "on the piss"=consume alcoholic beverages..."after a night on the piss, there really is nothing like a hot sausage roll." (to be) "pissed"=drunk..."he was pissssssssssssssed at the party at lulu's..."--long "s" for emphasis, or short "s" and just say, "pissed as a fart" (or maybe that is just a belinda-ism) "take the piss" = make fun of, or as we would say, "to give (someone) shit"..."sutto enjoys taking the piss out of me about being from the university of spoiled children."
okay, i am sure there are more...
