hi athletes!

I did my first long run on the treadmill at the gym last night.  the days here are getting shorter and so there is not enough daylight to get my run in outdoors after work, and I don't fancy getting hit by a car or getting kidnapped by a bad guy, or worst of all spraining my ankle.  (the only well-lit places to run at night here have too many traffic lights.)

anyway I got out my ipod and brought a large towel for my 90-minute session but would appreciate any pointers on how to make a long run on the treadmill much more pleasant.  specifically the two things that make treadmill running particularly disgusting:

1) boredom
2) obscene amount of sweatiness that accrues on my body and splashing all over the display.   Embarrassed

ugh, I was so gross after only 10 minutes and it only got worse!!  by the time I was completely drenched down to the socks and shoes.

I think I am more disgusted by #2 than #1.  but all suggestions are welcome!

be thankful you are in a gym, where i assume there is aircon! think about brasil, no aircon....oh yeah. that's sweaty.

advice is just keep doing it and you build your mental and physical treadmill tolerance!:)

well ,
i think it has been a huge positive , for you ,to see why you run , so bloody slow .

weak desires get weak results .
and you got them by the bucket loads .
my advise
get down ,get wet ,and get dirty .
and the biggie ,
get real .
tredmill focusses  everybody , on one fact .
performance .
no view , no flowers , no useless reason for doing it , but ,the loneliness, of you your run and your performance to self discipline , to keep you company .
you just got vto love that  Grin

Good point Doc.

Now I'm torn between 32km on a machine this weekend or lovely East Coast (Motorway) park...

Machine sounds good though.

Anyone know of a machine that can go for this far/long in Singapore, and I won't get bumped by the staff because of poxy 90 min rules ? (I am no record breaker so it will be 2.45 or so hours) I"ve only found ones that will go to 19/20km before..

Thanks

best chance is to discuss with the staff before you do it , and arrange when it is least busy for them , or they will keep bumping you , form my experience

ok!  I did another 90min on the machine last night and it went tons easier actually.  I went into it with a better attitude and more focus.   Smiley

it also helped that I went to a different gym location, where the treadmills aren't all bunched up in the corner right in front of a wall (my first experience--which wasn't well ventilated).  plus I wasn't right in front of a mirror having to stare at myself suffering.  so this time there was much more A/C and ventilation, and I chose a machine next to a broken one, so there was one less warm body right close to me.

and I made sure to wear thinner socks and a spandex outfit so that when I got super sweaty it wasn't as noticeable.  success!
