Hi guys,

I just want to ask for some tips and advise, my concern is whether to use a big ring or a small ring in a race where the bike course consists of 70% to 80% climbs and hills. I know you guys train using the big ring on climbs but on race day do you still use the big ring on climbs? I've been doing the same thing and my worry is, if I use the big ring on climbs then my legs might already be tight for the run leg and might not be able to run as fast as i want to. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Ferdie

Hi Ferdie

We do use our big chain rings in training as a strengthening exercise.  But in racing, you are racing.  So you want to go as fast as you can without tiring the legs out completly for the run.
On a hilly course I would use my big chain ring for the flats and some small climbs.  But on big climbs I would put it in my small chain ring, get up the hill fast and with ease, AND have somethings in my legs for the run!

Hi Bella,

Thanks for the advise. I've been wondering about this for quite some time now. I use to think that since most pros train with big rings during the climbs that you guys also use big rings in climbs during races. Thanks again really appreciate it Smiley

I don't know you might want to get Big Sexy to answer this.  isn't his other nickname "Big Ring Chris"?
