i asked her too , because of one reason .
people are always looking to improve things , and like shoe companies they develop the perfect one , and they change it cause more models need to be sold
so if the correct shoe for many was developped in 1984 , then what about next years model

this is the most individual , thing in triathlon , and the one plan fits all , is why 1/2 the iron people are
there shitting and throwing up along the way .
they are getting their grams in or the calories
oh here is a couple of salt tablets , wheees the caffiene ? what about this magic stuff , give this a whirl .

keep it to the stuff you practice on .
dont stress about it
get a routine and stick to it .
you dont like gels fine , doesnt mean your race is over ,
just find a replace ment ,
it could be melted chocolate bars for the run .
taste better have huge callorie and fat .
but watch people howl me down .
let me tell you , i had a little experience in 1980 something
i had a swimmer , called evan barry , and the boy by swim standards was slow
so that would have made him a triathlon swim guru
but he trained very hard , and was a nice , kid
so we said , evan , your not going to the olympics , i can tell you that , he said thanks doc for your honesty , what can we do to get my name remembered some where and then i will give it away
and go to uni and give that 100%
swimmers tend to be much more realists than wanna be triathletes , but i digress
so , i thought for a week
and some stupid thing come up
about the guiness book world record for 24 hrs swim
was 90 km
i thouhgt for another week worked out the splits .
talked to my mate , who now coacheS mr hacket , so he know s his stuff.
and we thought a supa fit guy could nail it .
so , we had a meeting ,and as evan was already very fit , we said at the queensland swimmothon
we would train for 10 weeks and give it a crack .
so during that time even coverd some times 20km a day at least 3 times a week .
we got in touch with all the gurus at the uni of brisbane about what to eat and drink .
now evan was a man after my own heart and had a very particular stomach ,
so all we tried , didnt work, he got cramps , he had to toilet .
but reelly he just hates the taste of every thing
our resident sports guru and nutritionalist , said forget it
the kid is kidding ,no discipline .
well i watch him swim 100x 100 3 times a week and once with a band , the doc back in them days makes the tri version look like a pussy cat .
but i knew a kid that did that , didnt lack discipline , and he didnt lack brains either .
so 1 week left , i sat down with even and said every swim set i see you with a can a coke and a mars bar
before each session and after each .
i saaid even , dont that make you sick ?
he said doc , i live on this , i drink 10 canS a day and eat may be 8 mars bars , 4 before and after training
3 at school and one at night .
but , i am worried coach how i am going to get thru , with out stopping for , food
as 90 km is about 1min 30 or faster per long course 100
i said son , that is not a worry now .
so when even donned his trunks in lane 1 of the valley pool in brisbane , at midday .
coach had lined up the mars distributor , and the coke bottler
and even was going to be rocket fueled by them exclusively
the gun went and so did even , hammering 1m20 100s , like a swiss watch chimes
and in one 100 at 30 min he back stoked and ate 1/2 a mars bar , then swigged coke off the block on ever 8th 100 ,
well he powered thru the night , on his rocket fuel and into the morning he was still ripping along
i was absolutely amazed ,i knew the boy was a natural stayer but this was redicoulous ,
9 am he started to falter , the sun burn was killing him , we pulle him out , swathed hin in 50 plus sun bloc and off he went again
oh the food , well we stuck to the same , and it still sticks in my head today , as the last 30 min he being a proud man , said coach lets let the brake off ,and mr barry swam the last set of 100 on on 1h\m15
banging the wall , tally ing up his laps the guinees book rep
said 96 km and even barry had his , piece of time in the sun ,
and i was so proud , cause this kid , was a worker , with a limited talent , one that wasnt limited ,was self
there wasnt a set, he wouldnt try , his fav 3x 5000m on 1hr interval yes tri guys you read right !
the record stood for a long long time ,
but what sticks in my mind even today , they took him to hospital , 3rd degree burns
queensland sun does it to yer ,
and all else he was fine , but i went in to visit him , and there he was sitting up
sipping a coke , and eating a mars bar , saying coach , the hour 6 to 12 , then 18 to 20
were the tuffest , but if we dont count them , it was sweet .
yep i think that was an understatement ,
i kid you not .
evan barry taught me more , than most , i have had to pay to listen to , on the subject !
