MBE grabbed her first Ironman title of 2013 at the iconic Ironman France event. In the process, MBE also broke the course record and led wire to wire. MBE started the day with the fastest swim and then headed off on her P5. A bike crash early in the ride briefly put the victory in jeopardy, but MBE recovered and only lost a few minutes on the side of the road. She then ran away to take the title with a comfortable margin of almost ten minutes. Mathias also started the race after battling injuries since August 2012 and was using this race to see if he could race through the issues. Unfortuneatly, Mathias had to retire during the run as his body just wasn't up to the task. He will try to recover and take care of his injuries so he can be back on the podium where he belongs.
MBE told us:
I am so pleased to win Ironman France. It has been a difficult year plagued with injuries and the dog attack so I am just happy to be able to be racing. I had a good swim coming out in front. On the bike I was feeling great until I crashed at 80km. I can't believe that I crashed on the bike; it was a stupid error on my part as a I misjudged a corner and had to jam on my brakes. My rear wheel locked up and I slid into a ditch on the corner. After the crash, I rode all the descents in the race very slowly. Onto the run, I had no pain so I just tried to hold steady and stay in the lead. Jeanne Collogne is a great competitor and I knew she'd be chasing me hard. I feel so lucky to have been able to fight hard and win another Ironman.
Reporting in Mathias Hecht told us:
I have been trying to get back from injury and it has been a hard way so far. I was hoping that I could compete in this race without the major injury problems surfacing. Unfortuneatly, the pain came I was unable to finish. I now know that I need to take some time to get healthy. I will be back and better than ever.
